[English]
Seyyed Hassan Hosseini and Adnan al-Sayegh are contemporary Iranian and Iraqi poets, both of whom have composed poetry regarding the Iran-Iraq War. This study examines the war poetry of these two poets, extracting their conceptual metaphors and poetic imagery. These metaphors are then analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method grounded in the semiotic framework of Michael Riffaterre. Riffaterre’s semiotic theory places particular emphasis on decoding the intricate, interwoven network of signs within a poem; he posits that poetry often involves stating one thing while intending another, and thus, the interpretation of a poem should focus on uncovering this underlying, intended meaning. Consequently, this research adopts Riffaterre’s approach to discern the latent intent behind the metaphors. Within his semiotic framework, specific elements—namely the displacement of meaning, the transformation of meaning, value systems, and the subversion of grammatical norms—were identified and analyzed within the works of both poets. Furthermore, their linguistic value systems were examined through the signs present in their poetry to reveal their underlying ideologies and discursive beliefs. The findings indicate that Hosseini predominantly employs metaphors rooted in themes of love and mysticism to describe the actions of Iranian combatants, whereas al-Sayegh focuses more on the epic dimension of metaphors, occasionally incorporating negative imagery to articulate the adverse consequences of the war. By employing techniques of displacement and semantic transformation within their conceptual metaphors, the two poets have utilized various concepts to describe ideas related to this event.
