[English]

This study offers a comparative examination of urban spaces in two landmark novels of contemporary Middle Eastern literature—Naguib Mahfouz’s Cairo Trilogy (Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, and Sugar Street) and Ali Mohammad Afghani’s Her Husband, Ahu Khanom—through the lens of Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space. Lefebvre conceptualizes space as a social and dialectical product and provides an analytical triad consisting of spatial practice (daily routines and activities), representations of space (ideological and official constructs), and representational spaces (lived, symbolic, and imaginary experiences). By employing narrative content analysis, the research demonstrates that the urban settings of Cairo and Kermanshah function not merely as passive backdrops for plot development but as active agents in reproducing social relations, class and gender conflicts, and cultural transformations during the transition from tradition to modernity. The comparative reading reveals both similarities and differences in the representation of urban space across Arab and Iranian contexts, while underscoring space as a dynamic element in the formation of identity and social history.
