This paper delves into the study and analysis of the image of Sistan in Istakhri's al-Masālik wa-l-Mamālik. By employing the interdisciplinary method of "imagology" within the realm of comparative literature, the paper aims to comprehend the cultural identity and true image of the Sistan region from the perspective of "the other." Istakhri, a renowned geographer and travel writer of the 3rd and 4th centuries AH, describes various regions and tribes of Iran and Islamic countries in his work, including Sistan. The Persian translation of al-Masālik wa-l-Mamālik from the 6th and 7th centuries serve as valuable ancient Persian prose texts to be explored.
This essay seeks to address these key questions: What types of images of Sistan does Istakhri present in his work? How does he evaluate and narrate these images, and what are the reasons behind his depictions? Drawing upon the principles of imagology, the paper categorizes and analyzes the different types of images associated with Sistan in seven indicators: cultural, religious, political, historical, economic, architectural, and geographical.
The findings of this research reveal a total of 159 images related to Sistan within Istakhri's book. Geographical images comprise the largest portion, accounting for 46%, followed by historical images at 16%. Notably, positive images dominate, representing 60% of the total, indicating Istakhri's favorable perspective towards the people of Sistan. The essay concludes by highlighting several influential factors that shaped these images, like the author's intentions in creating the book, influences from previous works, ecological factors, and societal structures of Istakhri's era.
