Abstract

The aim of the current research is to examine the prominent cognitive metaphors that have been used with the focus on social themes in the two novels "Ayenehaye Dardar" by Houshang Golshiri and "Al- Lless Wal-Kelab" by Najib Mahfouz - two realist writers who have reflected the social situation in their works. This research theoretically based on the theory of conceptual metaphors in cognitive semantics, which has elevated metaphor from merely an aesthetic tool to an approach for knowing and thinking. This research, using qualitative and quantitative content analysis method and with the approach of the Russian School of comparative literature, seeks to answer these questions: how and with what frequency did Houshang Golshiri and Najib Mahfouz conceptualize the common social themes their two novels? The findings of the research indicate that dealing with social issues, especially love, women, humanism, desire for the past, the social environment of the two authors, and subjectivism are among the similarities of the two authors, which are conceptualized in the form of conceptual metaphor. In these two novels, the ontological and structural metaphor have a high frequency, but the directional metaphor has a lesser appearance.
