Exploring the Role of Themes in Literature and Their Application in Comparative Literature

Abstract


 
The present research examines the application of themes and images as an effective methodology in comparative literature. Although, on the surface, this strategy seems, to some extent, outdated in comparative literature, we claim that by the evaluation of these literary features we reach a complex group of internally-linked meanings from which robust accounts of function and value can emerge that can set the tone for a comparative study in literature. This thematic approach to literature finds its true expression when it is compared with its immediate cultural context, which can provide, for the attentive reader, rich sources of meaning. This can engage us in a wider debate on method and scope of comparative literature, and can help us answer questions like, what is the overall aim of a comparative literary research? What is the subject matter and how should we choose our methodology for comparison? And eventually, how do the results of our analysis broaden the horizons for future comparative interpretations? Responding to such fundamental questions enables us to follow shared sets of principles specifically when it comes to wider cultural matters. This all, as we intend to demonstrate, can be made possible when we employ themes and images as creative means to achieve greater literary and cultural ends.

دور المضامین فی الأدب وتوظیفه فی الأدب المقارن (دراسة وتحلیل)

لقد کرّسنا هذا المقال للبحث فی دور المضامین ومکانتها کمنهج أدبیّ فی الدّراسات المقارنة. یبدو موضوع المقال بادئ ذی بدء موضوعا نمطیا وشکلیا لا یحتوی على نقطة جدیدة، ألّا أنّه یرید الکشف عن حقیقة هامّة وهی الدّراسة المضمونیّة للنّصوص الأدبیّة کإحدى الآلیات الهامّة الّتی تتکفّل دراسة الأدب. من المؤکّد أنّ أهمّیّته ناجمة عن أنّه یعدّ من الآلیات البحثیّة الّتی تمکننا من العثور على منظومة دلالیّة رائعة تکمن فی خبایا النّصوص الأدبیّة. والّتی تتوفّر فی ظلّها الظّروف المواتیة للانخراط فی الدّراسات الأدبیّة المقارنة. علماً أنّ أجزاء هامّة من هذه المنظومة الدّلالیّة تتعلّق بالنّسیج الثّقافی والاجتماعی الّذی یختبئ وراء النّصوص الأدبیّة. والّذی یعتبر معینا عذبا لا ینضب یستقی منه القارئ حتّى الارتواء. هذه المعطیات تمهد الطّریق للإجابة عن أسئلة أساسیّة یدور حولها هذا المقال. الا وهی، ما هو الهدف الرّئیسی الّذی یظلّ وراء الدّراسات المقارنة؟ وما هی العناصر الّتی نتفحصها من خلال البحوث المقارنة؟ وما هو المنهج الّذی نعتمده أثناء الدّراسة؟ وما هی الآفاق الجدیدة الّتی تفتحها هذه الدّراسة أمام المخاطب؟ والاجابة على التّساؤلات المذکورة لتتوفّر الأرضیّة الملائمة للوصول إلى منهج موحّد وإطار محدّد للدّراسات المقارنة وخاصّة فیما یخصّ جوانبها الثّقافیّة. بناء على ذلک یرمی هذا المقال إلى استخدام الدّراسة المضمونیّة کتقنیّة حدیثة وبنیویّة نستمدّها عبر إنجازنا للبحوث المقارنة.
